This project was very dear to our hearts.

Going on the Wixárika pilgrimage was radically transformational for us. It tested us to our core in ways we couldn’t have imagined. On the last day, as per tradition, we circled back to end our work at the village to dance altogether. We found ourselves negotiating the space under a tiny plastic tarp which provided the only shade from the desert sun, but under the plastic, it was unbearably hot. There was no respite, and we thought about them having to do this every year.

We decided to raise money to build a structure for them which was completed in 2018. Now on the last day of their pilgrimage, they can seek respite and celebrate in a shaded, cool area. This area has become a center of the community for gatherings, discussions and celebrations.
