Ninawa Pai da Mata, the Huni Kuin leader of Novo Futuro Village, was our first ally in the Amazon. Since 2015, we have raised funds for his village to build an artesian well, a school, a cultural center, five residential houses, several fishponds and a Kupishawa ceremonial house. Thanks to this work, the village’s festival, Eskawata Kayawai, has welcomed considerably more visitors from around the world who come to learn from the forest and its peoples and meet the rich cultural heritage of the Huni Kuin. This provides the whole community enough resources to maintain autonomy and strengthens their culture and identity.
